KLIK SAJA - Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, is well known for never shying away from controversial and sensational statements.

“You want a new political party, and you shall have it!” Musk declared in early July.

He added, “When our country is being bankrupted by waste and corruption, we are living in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

The America Party was conceived by Musk as a viable alternative to the two dominant U.S. parties—the Democrats and the Republicans.

He expressed his intention to field candidates in 2 to 3 Senate seats and up to 10 House districts.

Given the narrow balance of power between Democrats and Republicans in Congress, Musk believes that securing just a few seats would be enough to hold the deciding vote on contentious legislation.

With consistent public support for a third party, the idea might seem promising—right?

Wrong, said Bernard Tamas, a political science professor at Valdosta State University and author of The Demise and Rebirth of American Third Parties.

“At this point in American politics, I see no evidence that a new party will be able to win seats in Congress and actually influence government,” Tamas said.

“It’s not just about the money that Democrats and Republicans have. They have all the infrastructure: the money, 150 years of organization, professional politicians, political consultants, and top advertising firms.”

The concept of the America Party seems to have emerged within just a few weeks, following Musk’s public feud with Donald Trump.

Like many ideas born out of anger, several aspects appear underdeveloped. The domain americaparty.com is already owned by someone else and is now being offered for $6.9 million.

On X, Musk’s own platform, the handle @AmericaParty was already taken, forcing the new movement to settle for @AmericaPartyX.

It remains unclear what the party actually stands for, aside from its opposition to the national debt increase driven by the Republican Party.

Musk has not specified which "contentious laws" his candidates would oppose, and there is no official platform or manifesto.
