Though he netted just seven Premier League goals last season — his lowest since joining Spurs — Son still looks sharp, with enough pace and technical ability to make a major impact at any level. At 33, he’s younger than many recent global stars who have arrived in MLS.

Lionel Messi and Marco Reus joined MLS at age 35, Luis Suárez at 37, and both Olivier Giroud and Hugo Lloris were also 37 when they joined LAFC last year.

Son will reunite with his longtime Tottenham teammate, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who has been in stellar form since arriving in Los Angeles.

French forward Denis Bouanga remains LAFC’s only designated player under contract.

General Manager John Thorrington has faced some criticism for underutilizing the club’s financial muscle this season, especially after a failed months-long pursuit of Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid.

While both Bouanga and Son naturally play on the left wing, Son’s versatility makes him a valuable asset in multiple attacking roles — whether through the middle or down the right flank.

Son also seems like a perfect tactical fit for LAFC’s high-speed, counterattacking style — unlike Giroud, whose game was less compatible with the club’s fast-paced system and who departed after a disappointing year.

That said, changes could be coming this winter, as head coach Steve Cherundolo is set to depart for Germany after a largely successful four-season run that included an MLS Cup title.***
