KLIK SAJA - BC Place will host one of the most intriguing fixtures of the opening round at the 2026 FIFA World Cup when Australia take on Turkey in a Group D showdown on Saturday.

Vancouver will stage the second match in a highly competitive group that also features the United States and Paraguay, with all four nations battling for a place in the knockout rounds.

Australia's qualification for the 2026 World Cup came as little surprise, having now reached six consecutive editions of football's biggest tournament.

The Socceroos also enjoyed a memorable campaign in Qatar four years ago, advancing to the Round of 16 and recording one of the finest achievements in the nation's football history.

While it may be difficult for Australia to emerge as genuine dark horses this summer, Tony Popovic's side will certainly believe they have a realistic chance of progressing from a group that includes the United States and Paraguay.

The Socceroos prepared for the tournament with two friendly matches. They suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Mexico on May 31 before earning a respectable 1-1 draw against Switzerland on June 6.

Australia will face the United States in their second group match on June 19 before concluding the group stage against Paraguay on June 25.

Interestingly, Australia and Turkey have met only twice before, both in friendly matches played in May 2004. Turkey emerged victorious on both occasions, recording 3-1 and 1-0 wins.

Turkey, meanwhile, are appearing at the FIFA World Cup for only the third time in their history and for the first time since their remarkable run to the semi-finals in 2002, where they ultimately finished third.

The Crescent-Stars also reached the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2024 and possess a squad packed with exciting talent.

As a result, they are widely viewed as one of the tournament's potential surprise packages, particularly given their impressive recent form.

Vincenzo Montella's side are unbeaten in their last eight matches, winning seven of those encounters.

Their preparations for the World Cup included a dominant 4-0 victory over North Macedonia and a 2-1 win against Venezuela.

Turkey secured their place at the tournament by defeating Kosovo 1-0 in the European playoff final last March, underlining their ability to deliver in high-pressure situations.
