KLIK SAJA - If you're looking to observe primates in an environment that closely resembles their natural habitat, the Schmutzer Primate Center or Pusat Primata Schmutzer (PPS), located within the Ragunan Zoo complex in Jakarta, is a must-visit destination.

Spanning 13 hectares, PPS is not only the largest primate conservation center in Southeast Asia but also meets international standards with its open-zoo concept.

Established through the initiative and legacy of Mrs. Puck Schmutzer—a German-born animal lover and painter—the center was initially managed by The Gibbon Foundation before being fully handed over to Ragunan Zoo in 2006.

Her name lives on in honor of her tremendous contribution to primate conservation in Indonesia.

Home to more than 25 species of primates, PPS showcases both native Indonesian species such as orangutans, gibbons, macaques, and langurs, as well as African primates like gorillas and chimpanzees.

Each species is housed in environments carefully designed to mimic their natural habitats, complete with lush trees, ponds, and natural rock formations.

One of the main highlights is the gorilla observation bridge, where visitors can view lowland gorillas from above.

These majestic creatures can weigh over 100 kilograms and are the true icons of PPS.

The center offers more than just recreation—it’s also a hub for education.

Visitors can walk through the orangutan tunnel to observe their behaviors up close, and explore various educational facilities including a theater, museum, library, and primate life dioramas.

There’s even an animal kitchen that provides insights into primate diets and care routines.

A popular attraction is the gorilla feeding time at 12 PM daily, where guests can witness the unique interactions between the animals and their caretakers.

Interestingly, PPS maintains a high standard of cleanliness by prohibiting outside food. Every visitor is checked at the entrance—even candy is confiscated to keep the area clean and safe.
