KLIK SAJA - Looking to take a crucial step toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Australia resume their Asian qualifying campaign this Thursday, hosting already-qualified Japan on home soil.

While the undefeated Samurai Blue can start preparing for next summer, the Socceroos still need to fend off Saudi Arabia to secure second place in Group C—and with it, a direct berth to the global finals.

Australia know that just four points from their final two group matches will be enough to book automatic qualification.

They face their main rival for the runner-up spot, Saudi Arabia, next Tuesday.

Currently three points ahead of the Green Falcons with a superior goal difference, the Socceroos solidified their position in March with back-to-back wins—thrashing Indonesia 5-1 and defeating China 2-0.

Should Tony Popovic’s side stumble this month, all is not lost.

The third and fourth-placed teams will advance to the next stage of AFC qualification in October, where two more direct World Cup slots will be up for grabs.

Even then, those who miss out will still have one final chance via the intercontinental playoffs.

Naturally, Australia will be eager to avoid that convoluted path. A win in Perth could all but seal their qualification—and if not, they’ll get a second shot next week.

Much has changed since the team’s dip in form that led to the departure of former coach Graham Arnold, who guided the Socceroos to the Round of 16 at Qatar 2022.

Under Popovic, the team remains unbeaten, but now they face a tougher test.

Australia haven’t beaten Japan in 16 years. However, last October’s 1-1 draw in Saitama did put an end to a three-match losing streak.

Japan, meanwhile, can afford to play with freedom after clinching their spot at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The Samurai Blue remain unbeaten in the third phase of qualifying, including a recent goalless draw against Saudi Arabia. They have won six out of eight matches so far.
