KLIK SAJA - If you're a fan of noodle dishes, chances are you've enjoyed them at least once using chopsticks.

But did you know that this simple eating utensil holds a long and fascinating place in Asian culinary history?

Chopsticks are widely used across Asia as the preferred dining tool, and over time, they've gained popularity in many parts of the world.

Believed to have originated around 5,000 years ago, the humble chopstick began as nothing more than an ordinary twig used to pull food from boiling pots.

The earliest physical evidence of chopsticks dates back to around 1200 BC, discovered in Henan Province, China—an area also known for early writing tools.

As cooking techniques evolved, chefs realized they could cook food faster and save fuel by cutting ingredients into smaller pieces.

This method eliminated the need for knives at the dinner table and paved the way for chopsticks to become a more common utensil.

By the 5th century AD, chopsticks had become deeply embedded in daily dining culture.

The rise in popularity of chopsticks in China is also often linked to the era of the renowned philosopher Confucius.

Known for his aversion to violence, Confucius disliked the presence of sharp objects at the table.

His preference for gentler alternatives made chopsticks, with their blunt tips, a more fitting choice.

He once said: “The honorable and upright man keeps well away from both the slaughterhouse and the kitchen. And he allows no knives on his table.”

By around 500 AD, chopsticks had spread beyond China and were commonly used in households across Japan, Korea, and Vietnam.

In those early years, they were often connected at the top with a piece of bamboo and used primarily in religious ceremonies.
