Klik Saja - A major tragedy shook India on the afternoon of Thursday, June 12, 2025, when an Air India aircraft, flight number AI171, crashed into a medical college campus in Ahmedabad.
The plane was en route from Ahmedabad to London, carrying 242 people—230 passengers and 12 crew members.
The death toll has now risen to 260, making it the deadliest aviation disaster in India since 1996, and one of the worst in global aviation history.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner reportedly took off at 1:38 p.m. local time but lost control shortly after takeoff.
It crashed into the dining hall of B.J. Medical College, where approximately 60 to 80 students were present.
Many victims were unaware of the impending disaster until it was too late.
According to the college dean, Minakshi Parikh, at least five students were killed on the spot, while 10 to 12 others were trapped in the resulting blaze.
Most students managed to escape, but the explosion and intense fire that followed the crash made rescue operations extremely difficult and chaotic.
Emergency responders and fire crews were deployed en masse to contain the flames and evacuate survivors.
The incident has overwhelmed local authorities and sent shockwaves across the nation.
Air India confirmed that among those onboard, there were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian citizen.
In an official statement, India’s Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that only one person survived the crash.
The sole survivor was 40-year-old British national Viswash Kumar Ramesh, who had been sitting near the emergency exit. He managed to leap from the aircraft moments before it exploded.
