KLIK SAJA - Who would have thought that a bustling global metropolis like New York City could soon be led by a Muslim?

That possibility is embodied in Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic candidate for mayor of New York.

In a surprising upset during the Democratic primary, Mamdani defeated political heavyweight Andrew Cuomo.

Cuomo, the former governor of New York State, was attempting a political comeback after stepping down in 2021 amid a sexual harassment scandal.

In a speech to his supporters, Cuomo conceded defeat, acknowledging that the 33-year-old democratic socialist had won the primary.

“Tonight belongs to him,” said the 67-year-old Cuomo, adding that he would review the situation before deciding his next steps.

If elected, Mamdani would make history: the first Muslim, the first South Asian, the first millennial, and the first member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) to serve as mayor of the largest city in the United States since 1993.

Given New York’s solidly liberal leanings, the primary results are widely seen as a strong indicator of the outcome in the upcoming general election in November.

The race is also being closely watched as a barometer for the future direction of the Democratic Party, which is looking to reshape its messaging after suffering defeats in the last national election—when Donald Trump's Republican Party took the White House and both chambers of Congress.

Preliminary results on Tuesday night showed Mamdani holding a strong lead, though he had not yet surpassed the 50% threshold needed for an outright win.

A Bold, Millennial Progressive

Zohran Mamdani is a fresh face in New York politics—a millennial and a relative unknown until recently.

Born in Uganda on October 18, 1991, he moved to New York City with his family at the age of seven.

Mamdani has connected with the city’s diverse communities through multilingual campaign efforts, including one video entirely in Urdu featuring clips from Bollywood films, and another delivered in Spanish.
