French President Emmanuel Macron could not hide his amazement as he set foot in the majestic complex of Borobudur Temple.
During his visit to Indonesia on Thursday, May 29, 2025, President Macron expressed deep admiration for the nation's cultural masterpiece.
“This temple is not just a monument. It is a symbol of human excellence—a source of inspiration for the entire world,” Macron declared in an official statement at the Borobudur site.
For him, Borobudur is far more than a sacred structure or tourist destination. It is the embodiment of a great civilization that reflects the heights of artistic, cultural, and spiritual achievement.
He said he felt honored to witness one of Indonesia’s—and the world’s—greatest cultural legacies firsthand.
President Macron also extended high praise for Indonesia’s cultural richness. “We deeply admire the rich artistic and cultural history of Indonesia,” he remarked.
He emphasized the importance of the cultural connection between Indonesia and France, calling the launch of a strategic partnership in the field of culture a significant milestone in strengthening ties between the two nations.
The French president also commended the collaboration between the Indonesian government and UNESCO in preserving Borobudur.
He noted that this cooperation had succeeded in safeguarding the temple while enhancing global recognition of its historical and spiritual significance.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who accompanied Macron during the visit, warmly welcomed the French leader.
“It is a great honor for us to welcome Your Excellency to this historic site,” Prabowo stated.
He described Borobudur as a “masterpiece of civilization” that is not only a source of national pride but also a world heritage symbol rich in meaning, peace, and spirituality.
President Prabowo emphasized that Indonesia and France share a long-standing friendship built on universal values.
“We uphold the same spirit and humanitarian values—tolerance, respect for cultural heritage, religious beliefs, ethnic groups, and peaceful coexistence,” he said.
He added that strong friendship and collaboration pave the way for a better future.
“We believe that only through friendship, solidarity, and cooperation can we achieve a better life,” he concluded.
